ISHIKOBO YOSHIDA
At the western edge of Japan, in Kumamoto.
Further west lies Amakusa Island.
Surrounded by sea and sky,
there stands a small atelier dedicated to crafting compact hand-turned stone mills.
Its name is Ishikobo Yoshida.
For twenty years, in dialogue with stone.
About two hours by car from Kumamoto City,
beyond the Amakusa Five Bridges,
a quiet workshop continues its work.
A land where the history of hidden Christians rests,
where dolphins swim,
and where Amakusa pottery stone gave birth to fine porcelain.
On this tranquil island,
Ishikobo Yoshida has been grinding, carving, and shaping stone.
Nearly twenty years.
Bringing forgotten stone mills back to life.
Once essential to daily life in Japan,
stone mills are now often reused as stepping stones in gardens.
Yet Ishikobo Yoshida understands
their true form.
A stone mill is not merely a tool that crushes powder.
It is a structure designed to preserve aroma and draw out flavor.
Turn slowly.
Do not allow heat to build.
Protect the delicacy of the ingredient.
Ancient wisdom,
grafted into modern life.
Stone mills designed for contemporary spaces.
We craft
[Coffee Stone Mills] [Matcha Stone Mills]
Preserving traditional grooving techniques,
refining proportions,
and shaping forms that harmonize with modern interiors.
Suitable for kitchens,
earthen floors,
and quiet studies alike.
An Ishikobo Yoshida stone mill is
a tool,
a sculptural presence,
and an instrument that restores the rhythm of time.
From Amakusa to the world.
Because it is remote,
we are able to preserve a certain pace.
We ship throughout Japan
and internationally.
No matter where it travels,
the gentle rotation of stone remains unchanged.
Not efficiency,
but quietness delivered.
Ishikobo Yoshida.
A small yet steadfast commitment
to preserving the tradition of stone milling for the future.
By the sea in Amakusa,
the stone continues to turn, slowly.

This video introduces our workshop and part of the production process
The craftsmanship of artisans
The stone used for our millstones is made entirely of extremely hard granite. To process this material, specialized cutters and grinding tools embedded with artificial diamonds are required. Once the overall shaping is complete, the exterior is polished in a seven-step process to bring out the natural luster and color of the stone. The crucial process of grooving is not simple. Grooves differ depending on the intended use, such as for grains, matcha, coffee, or specialized materials. However, it is impossible to visually confirm the actual grinding process while in operation, so we rely on experience and intuition to perfect the finish. Starting out self-taught was challenging, but the experience I gained during that time has become evident in the usability of our products compared to those of other companies in the same industry.
